Nurses and other frontline healthcare workers are the backbone of the healthcare system, without them there is no system. In fact, politicians and bureaucrats are always talking about how nurses dedicate their lives to caring for others and are ‘superheroes’ (usually when the pollies/bureaucrats want something.
Well at the NPAQ we’re not about just talking, we’re about doing. So when an NPAQ nurse member reached out, feeling shocked and anxious after being notified that her unit would be closing, we assigned a senior case manager to get to the bottom of it.
The employer had advised that they would find positions for employees elsewhere, but provided no further information. Our case manager helped the member prepare a Fair Work Claim for unpaid redundancy, providing additional guidance and advice throughout the process.
After submitting the claim, the member was thrilled to receive a successful settlement of $6,000 plus superannuation, thanks to the assistance of the NPAQ case manager.
The workplace initially did not want to agree to a pay-out. But because of the strength of our case, made clear to them by our case manager, they ultimately agreed to the settlement
Our support and advocacy enabled her to stand up for her rights and be compensated for the loss of her position.
Nursing can be a challenging and demanding profession, and there should be an organisation that frontline workers can always count on.
Why is the NPAQ different? We believe that real change in healthcare STARTS with empowering frontline nurses, not bureaucrats.
